The Canal du Midi route

It took thirteen years to bring to completion one of the most important projects of the 17th century. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is one of the oldest navigable waterways in Europe. Its 241 kilometers have transformed river transport in the south of France by connecting the Garonne to the Mediterranean.

From Toulouse where it joins the Canal de Garonne, the route of the Canal du Midi heads south-east towards Castelnaudary then Carcassonne before joining Béziers. Approaching Agde, the canal runs along the Mediterranean Sea and flows into the pond of Thau at the end of which you can find Sète.

Its 63 locks and 7 canal bridges join the landscapes and the reliefs on a vertical difference of 200m spread out along the route.
